Promoting Mixed Martial Arts & Reality-Based Self-Defense
Grading Policy
The International Hosharafu Federation (IHF) follows a structured and rigorous belt grading system that reflects a practitioner’s mastery of techniques, discipline, and dedication. All member organizations of the IHF must strictly follow the official grading system outlined in this syllabus.
- Yellow Belt to Brown Belt certifications can be issued by recognized member countries and organizations.
- All Black Belt Certifications must be requested directly from the International Hosharafu Federation Headquarters.
- Black Belt Certificates of Hosharafu issued by any other organization or body are not acceptable and will not be recognized by the IHF.
The grading system begins at the novice level and progresses through various stages, each representing increasing levels of expertise and understanding of the Hosharafu martial art. Achieving higher ranks is a testament to years of training, skill refinement, and personal development.
Belt Grading System
White Belt (Novice Level)
Symbolism: Purity, a fresh beginning, and the start of the journey in Hosharafu.
Focus: Fundamental techniques, basic self-defense moves, and martial arts etiquette.
Yellow Belt (Beginner Level)
Minimum Training Period: 3–6 months
Symbolism: First steps of growth and learning.
Requirements:
- Understanding of IHF history, values, and safety rules.
- Basic knowledge of mixed martial arts terminology.
- Demonstrate discipline, respect, and proper training etiquette.
Techniques:
- Striking: Basic jab, cross, hook, uppercut, front kick, roundhouse kick.
- Defensive Skills: Basic guard stance, parry, block, evasion footwork.
- Grappling Basics: Break fall, forward roll, backward roll, basic clinch position.
- Self-Defense: Release from simple wrist grab, choke escape from front.
Green Belt (Intermediate Level)
Minimum Training Period: 6–9 months after Yellow Belt
Symbolism: Progress and development.
Requirements:
- Proficiency in Yellow Belt techniques.
- Basic sparring knowledge and controlled contact skills.
- Understanding of basic fight rules in Strike Fight, Ground Fight and Mixed Fight competition.
Techniques:
- Striking: Combination punches, knee strikes, side kick, spinning back kick.
- Defensive Skills: Checking kicks, slip, bob & weave.
- Grappling: Basic double-leg takedown, single-leg takedown, hip throw, mount control.
- Submission Basics: Rear naked choke (practice only), armbar from guard, guillotine choke.
- Self-Defense: Defense against rear choke, basic bear hug escape.
Blue Belt (Advanced Intermediate)
Minimum Training Period: 9–12 months after Green Belt
Symbolism: Growing confidence and technical proficiency.
Requirements:
- Solid execution of all previous belt techniques.
- Demonstrate good control in sparring with both striking and grappling.
- Basic competition experience or equivalent technical demonstration.
Techniques:
- Striking: Spinning back fist, jumping knee, axe kick, body kick combinations.
- Defensive Skills: Counter striking, angle changes, advanced guard blocks.
- Grappling: Sweep from guard, side control to mount, sprawl defense, basic trip takedowns.
- Submissions: Triangle choke, kimura, Americana, standing guillotine choke.
- Self-Defense: Defense against knife threat (basic level), defense against multiple attackers (controlled drill).
Brown Belt (Pre-Black Belt Level)
Minimum Training Period: 12–18 months after Blue Belt
Symbolism: Near mastery and readiness for Black Belt responsibilities.
Requirements:
- High proficiency in all previous techniques.
- Ability to teach lower belt levels.
- Strong understanding of fight strategies and rule variations in Strike Fight, Ground Fight and Mixed Fight.
Techniques:
- Striking: Spinning hook kick, elbow strikes (all angles), advanced punch-kick combinations.
- Defensive Skills: Advanced counters, feints, footwork transitions.
- Grappling: Arm drag to back control, double-leg to side control, advanced throws.
- Submissions: Omoplata, arm triangle choke, heel hook (demonstration only).
- Self-Defense: Defense against armed attacker (knife/stick, controlled environment), advanced ground defense.
Black Belt (Expert Level)
Minimum Training Period: Minimum 2 years after Brown Belt + recommendation from country representative.
Symbolism: Mastery over basic and intermediate techniques; beginning of a lifelong refinement journey.
Requirements:
- Mastery of all techniques in the syllabus.
- Proven competition, coaching, and leadership experience.
- Strong contribution to the promotion and development of Hosharafu Martial Art Style.
Techniques:
- All previous techniques with mastery, fluid transitions, and adaptation.
- Advanced fight strategy and cornering skills.
- Proficiency in teaching and developing fighters from beginner to advanced level.
- Demonstration of practical self-defense in multiple real-world scenarios.
Black Belt Degrees:
- 1st Degree Black Belt
The first level of mastery beyond the Black Belt. Practitioners at this level are expected to show leadership in teaching and mentoring others, while continuing to sharpen their skills and understanding of the martial art. - 2nd Degree Black Belt
The 2nd Degree Black Belt reflects further refinement of techniques and an in-depth knowledge of Hosharafu. Students are often engaged in advanced training and contribute to the growth of the community. - 3rd Degree Black Belt
At the 3rd Degree level, practitioners display exceptional skill and a deep understanding of Hosharafu principles. They are often instructors, guiding newer students and sharing their experience with the wider martial arts community. - 4th Degree Black Belt
This degree signifies a highly respected level of mastery. Practitioners are considered senior instructors, playing a key role in teaching, promoting, and evolving the art of Hosharafu. - 5th Degree Black Belt
Practitioners of the 5th Degree are recognized as experts in the art. They often hold leadership roles within the Federation and are deeply involved in the strategic direction and development of Hosharafu. - 6th Degree Black Belt
The 6th Degree Black Belt is awarded to martial artists who have dedicated many years to the study and promotion of Hosharafu. Their expertise and leadership are essential in shaping the future of the art. - 7th Degree Black Belt
A rare and prestigious level, the 7th Degree Black Belt is held by only the most seasoned practitioners. These individuals are seen as masters and mentors, influencing the next generation of martial artists. - 8th Degree Black Belt
Representing decades of dedication and mastery, the 8th Degree Black Belt is reserved for martial artists who have significantly contributed to the development and preservation of Hosharafu.
Red Belt Degrees:
- 9th Degree Red Belt
The 9th Degree Red Belt is one of the highest honors in the martial arts world. Holders of this rank are revered for their profound knowledge and enduring influence within Hosharafu. - 10th Degree Red Belt
The pinnacle of achievement in Hosharafu, the 10th Degree Red Belt represents the ultimate level of mastery. This rank is typically held by the founders and senior-most practitioners of the art, symbolizing a lifetime of unparalleled dedication to the martial arts.

Important Notes
- All grading evaluations must be documented and certified.
- All Black Belt and Degree holders are listed in IHF official website.
- Member organizations must maintain accurate grading records.
- Black Belt grading applications must be submitted to IHF HQ for review and approval.
- Failure to comply with these standards may result in suspension or removal from IHF membership.
